The Sommelier Wine Awards is a wine competition with a difference. Focused entirely on wines aimed at the on-trade, since it started in 2007 it has grown to become the key competition for wines trying to increase their presence in hotels, pubs, bars and restaurants, as well as the first point of reference for the UK's on-trade wine buyers.
Not only are wines that sell in the High Street supermarkets not permitted to enter, but all of the judges are members of the on-trade, too. The tasting panel for the Sommelier Wine Awards reads like a Who’s Who of the UK hotel, restaurant and sommelier scene.

LUNB
Lunaria Bucefalo (organic red) 2023/25
Region: Italy, Abruzzo
Grape Variety: Montepulciano
Background: Biodynamic wine is often considered superior to conventional wines, with better flavour, superior aroma, and more pleasant texture. Growers find that the biodynamic method yields a better growth balance, and ideal sugar content for the wine. The mountainous Abruzzo region of central Italy is situated halfway up the 'boot' of Italy. Cantina Orsogna is an award-winning Abruzzo winery specialising in native grapes of the region such as Perricone, Cococciola and Pecorino. Orsogna are committed to the biodynamic principles by which they make their wine and have many certified Demeter biodynamic wines. This Bucefalo is certified 'Demeter' biodynamic, this means that the vineyard has been subjected only to completely natural processes.
Tasting Notes: Broad and intense, the nose is dominated by fruity notes with opening of black cherries and blueberries, followed by spicy scents of tertiary origin aromas (resulting from aging) with notes of cocoa, coffee, tobacco and leather. It is really amazing tasting this red wine made from dried grapes, the astringency of tannins and the freshness of acidity are well matched with the natural sweetness of the wine. Excellent overall harmony, velvety, smooth and with a long persistence.
Award: Awarded as “Best Italian Winery” 2013, Orsogna Winery (located in Abruzzo region) is one of the largest producer of biological and biodynamic wine (Certified by Demeter).
